Vows

The promises that hold up after the day is over.

Personal wedding vows have a particular structural challenge: they have to land in the room on the day, and they have to hold up in the household for the years that follow. The two are not the same.

The pieces in this pillar are about both. How to write vows that read aloud well in a room of people, and how to write them so the printed version, framed and hung in the kitchen, still feels honest twenty years in.

We made the Vows Edition — typeset wedding vows on archival paper — because customers kept telling us that the vows they read on the day disappeared into the wedding folder afterward and were never seen again. Putting the vows on a wall, in a form that won't yellow, is one small way of carrying the day's most ceremonial promise into the ordinary years.
